The Nepal conflict has seemingly subsided at least for now, and as we patiently await a constituent assemby election, the issue of the Maoist army constantly bothers me. What are the Maoist leaders going to do with the plethora of nomadic militias under their arsenal whose only skill is knowing how to use a sub-machine gun? The thousands of uneducated recruits currently serving the people's liberation army, are going to be a huge "Social Burden" on the government. Merging with the RNA to create a new Nepal Army along with a brand new constitution and divesting the Monarchy sort of speak sounds absurd. The government is near Bankruptcy, how can they afford paying more people in the army. If they don't want to be in the army and want to live normal lives, go to school, get a job(good luck with that) etc, does the government have a strategic spending plan to get these people out of their perpetual rabbit holes that they are so accustomed to being in and out into the mainstream world to compete for a civlized and law abiding lifestyle? How to you transform Guerillas into a normal citizen? What promises did the Maoists make to these young men and women? Were they merely fighting for a constituent assembly? It seems to me that they were merely chasing fools gold.
